Announcements 12/2

The Advent Giving Tree is up! If you are able to assist a Vashon family in need, please take a tag (or two) from the tree, buy the gift, wrap it, attach the tag, and return it to the church by December 16th. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity and willingness to make Christmas brighter for those families. If you are unable to return the gift by December 16th, please contact Diane at 253-579-4683. Merry Christmas and God bless you.

All kids invited to dance!
Lucina Antunez is leading rehearsals of the dance La Pastorella which is performed to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe, and all children are invited. Rehearsals are here at SJV week nights at 6:30-7:30 for the next one and half weeks. We will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12th, with La Pastorella at 6:00 followed by Mass. No need to sign up—simply show up and learn the dance.

We are selling Christmas poinsettias that will decorate our church for the Christmas season. Plants are $15 each and can be purchased in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Plants will be labeled and a list of names of those being remembered will also be placed on the altar in the Prayer Book of Intentions for all Christmas Masses. Order forms are on the table in the vestibule. The deadline to order plants is Sunday, Dec. 16th. Please call Mary Ann Beardsley with questions, 206-567-4273.

Advent Lessons & Carols 2018
All parish children are invited to participate in our parish's advent tradition of telling the Advent and Christmas story through bible verses and carols. We are learning a new song this year, and we invite children who play an instrument to accompany some of our carols! If your child is interested, please come to the first rehearsal this Sunday. We will assign readings and costumes.

The final two rehearsals are today and next Sunday after the 10:30 Mass. Lessons & Carols will be performed at 9:30 on Dec. 16. The whole parish is invited to this wonderful SJV Advent event.

Book Group to discuss
'The Denial of Death'
The Vashon Ecumenical Book Group will discuss "The Denial of Death," by Ernest Becker, from 4 to 5:30 pm, this Sunday, Dec 2, at the Vashon Lutheran Church, 18623 Vashon Hwy SW. All are welcome. Becker, a cultural anthropologist and philosopher, argues that the fear of death unconsciously drives most human experience and can only be conquered through faith in a higher power.

9:15-10:15am Sundays
Join Fr. David or Brandon Sheard who will use Bishop Mueggenberg’s reflections on the Good News to lead us deeper into the Gospel reading of each Sunday. This class runs through March. Class will meet this weekend, and on Dec. 2. There is class this Sunday.

Please note that the Mass for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation, is next Saturday, December 8, at 10 AM. The 5PM Mass that day will be the Mass of the 2nd Sunday of Advent.
