Announcements 2/24

Sign-up Sheets are in the vestibule.
Lenten Soup Sundays after the 10:30 Mass will begin the 1st Sunday of Lent, March 10th. We will also celebrate Soup Sundays on March 24th and 31st, and on April 7th. The sign-up sheets requesting soup, bread, and clean up help are in the vestibule. Please choose a Sunday and share your family’s favorite soup (soups with meat are just fine), or, if bringing bread and helping to run the counter and to clean up sounds better, please sign up for that. We are hoping that many families will act as Soup Sunday hosts during Lent, providing a “vacation” for the generous Coffee Hour families who host us all year.

There will be a Pancake Breakfast celebrating Mardi Gras next Sunday, March 3rd, following the 10:30 Mass. The chefs would truly appreciate some clean up help. So after you thank Bruce, John, and Janice for their delicious pancakes, ask what you can do to share the clean up. Thank you.

We are asking all parishioners to take a couple of extra minutes after shopping and to take advantage of the 1% program the Island grocers offer. This is a very easy way to contribute to our parish. All you need to do is turn in all your Thriftway and IGA receipts to the collection boxes in the vestibule when you come to Mass. Please note that Thriftway receipts require a signature and phone number. For ease when calculating, we are asking that you turn them in as flat as possible, and with no staples or rubber bands. Thank you. In January we received $1,323.34 from these two Island businesses—this money goes into our general parish fund and helps SJV pay our bills.

Scout Reverence Sunday
This Sunday we welcome members of Vashon Cub Scout Pack 275 and Scout Troop 294 to celebrate Scout Sunday with us at the 10:30 Mass. After Mass the Scouts will be serving at Coffee Hour. They look forward to talking with you about Family Scouting, so please invite them to join you at your table.

Have you ever thought about what it’s like to help at Mass by serving at the Altar?  Fr. David is inviting all parishioners (who are 8+ and have received their First Communion) to share their faith and the gift of their participation at Mass by becoming an Altar Server at SJV. Serving at Mass is an honor and a privilege. It cultivates reverence and respect for the Eucharist, and a greater love of the Mass. It is also a very practical ministry that many more of us can do--both men and women… both younger and older! Men, if you were Altar Servers in your youth, would you like to serve again? And to our female parishioners, here is the opportunity you did not have as a child. An Altar Server has an essential role in the celebration of the Mass and the sacraments.  You help everyone present to pray well, and you are able to be close to Jesus in the sacred mysteries, rituals, and actions we celebrate.
In the next few weeks we will be offering Altar Server Training sessions for new Altar Servers.  Please seriously consider attending one of the upcoming sessions that Ellen Stewart, our Parish Sacristan, will lead.
Upcoming Altar Server Trainings:
All Trainings run 90 minutes

  • Sunday February 24:          12:00 noon – 1:30pm
The first session offered is this Sunday.
  • Sunday March 03:               12:00 noon – 1:30pm
  • Sunday March 31:               12:30pm – 2:00pm

If you would like to train to become an Altar Server, now is the time!  Please RSVP to Ellen Stewart at: by Friday February 22, 2019 to register for one of the training sessions.  Fr. David and Ellen are happy anytime to answer questions you might have as you decide to join this important ministry.
